Written by Sefton Hill, Ian Ball, and Martin Lancaster, Arkham Knight is inspired by the myths of full-length magazines. Set nine months after the events of 2011's Batman: Arkham City, the game's main story follows Batman as he faces off against Scarecrow, who has launched an attack on Gotham City, prompting an evacuation throughout the city. Scarecrow, with the help of the mysterious Arkham Knight, is also ready to unite Batman's greatest enemies in an effort to finally destroy Batman.

Batman: Arkham Knight is an action-adventure game set in the open world of Gotham City, which the player can freely explore from the beginning of the game, allowing him to seamlessly travel anywhere within its limits. These enemies can perform a charge and board attack only used by larger enemies in previous games; Dodge with precision, and a batarang can instantly defeat some charging enemies.

The system adds the power to mix attacks against prone enemies without interrupting a combo streak. Batman can counter enemy attacks and launch them at other enemies to increase damage. Batman is also able to disarm enemies wielding items such as baseball bats and use the acquired weapon on various enemies before it breaks.

Arkham Knight features "Dual Play", during which players can seamlessly switch control from Batman to at least one of his allies during certain game events: Robin, Nightwing, or Catwoman while in FreeFlow Combat, which the player enters. once they have built up an uninterrupted fighting streak. Each successful and uninterrupted attack adds to the player's combat score, which is transferred between each controlled character and unlocks double-team takedowns on opponents with higher scores.
